Reading is fundamental to learning. Many children especially those in rural communities do not have access to reading materials and the requisite teachers to support them, struggle to perform well.
This certainly has dire consequences on the poverty and ignorance levels in those areas.This is why we have initiated the weekends reading and homework assistance project at the Ejura Community Library to support such children to perform well and also go on to reduce the ignorance and poverty levels in their communities.
The READING AND SPELLINGBEE is a novelty which come to imbue into the children confidence to speak in public and also be able to become good readers .
In all, three(3) primary schools (NASIRIYA ISLAMIC PRIMARY SCHOOL , EJURA METHODIST PRIMARY SCHOOL and EJURA MODEL PRIMARY SCHOOL )represented by three(3) contestants each attended the event at the Ejura Community library . This was made possible in collaboration with the Ejura Community Library , The National Service Personnel Association , Pen To Paper as well as the Ghana Education Service Secretariat at Ejura Sekyedumase .
Speaking at the event , The librarian , Mr. Isaac stated that , since the partnership they had with RURAL SMILE FOUNDATION , a lot has changed in the reading habits of the children in the community . Attendance rate has gone high and the community library too has seen some facelift .
The QueenMother of Kasei Community ,Nana Yaa Agyeiwaa Kodie I, was also present . She admonished the children to cultivate the habit if reading since that will help them .She donated some exercise books as well.
Mr. Abdul Samed , who happens to be programs manager at Rural Smile also told the public to ensure that , their children cultivate the habit of reading since that will help enhance the performance of the kids .
Mr. Afriyie , the Moderator and president of the National Service Personnel Association welcome the idea of organizing the READING AND SPELLINGBEE as a novelty and also called on other stakeholders to support such initiatives.
At the end of the competition , EJURA MODEL EMERGED winners with 63pts, EJURA METHODIST CAME second with 53pts whiles NASIRIYA ISLAMIC PRIMARY SCHOOL came third with 35pts.
The best reader went to Miss Gladness of Ejura Model Prim. School whiles the best speller went to Mr. Nana Sarfo Ebenezer of EjuraModel Prim. School.
The contestants took away school bags from Pen To Paper Ghana , reading books from the library and study materials amongst others from Rural Smile Foundation /
